Do you believe in New Year’s Resolutions?

fullsizerender-14

One wouldn’t get in a sailboat without a compass or embark on a grueling scenic hike without a map.

Or would they?

Myself? I have a tendency to get lost.  Lost on a trail.  Lost on the freeway.  Lost in my thoughts.  A good plan keeps me focused and on task.  Goals help me to breakthrough inertia.  A map helps me to reach my destination.

So I plan.  And I plan.  And I journal.  And I plan some more.  And I re-read my old journals to see if life has deposited me somewhere close to where X marks the spot.

How about you?  Do you know where you want to go in 2017?  Do you have a hankering for something different?  Are you ready to change things up and see what sticks?  Or are you plodding along the same path.  Waking up to the same job.  Shopping at Target and getting take out from the Chinese restaurant on the corner.

Benjamin Franklin once said “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”.  Winston Churchill said this- “Those who fail to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it”.

In either case, some self reflection seems to be in order as we embark on a new year.

Your thoughts?

  1. I love where my life is and where it is going. I have no need to make New Year’s resolutions or to change things in my life. How lucky is that!

  2. Hey there One Hip Diva! Thanks for your blog and for your question here because it’s made me think…

I usually create a collage sometime in January to let my intentions for the new year show themselves to me. There’s a dialogue between the part of me that likes to plan (okay, control) my life and a part of me that I don’t often listen to–my soul. During the process of spreading out images, choosing the ones I like (for whatever reason), and arranging them on a board, I get lost in creative reverie. For the past six years I’ve done this and the boards have revealed to me–through patterns, colors, images, words and interaction between all these–where to put my energies for the year. Sometimes I hang the collage on the wall to remind me of what’s important and to give me guidance. At the end of the year, I have another look at the collage and see what parts of the collage manifested and how.

Last year I was “too busy” to create a collage. It was a particularly confusing and disorienting year for me (now I see this in retrospect). Does that collage with all its intention setting really have an influence on my year? I think so! I will be creating this year’s collage on my birthday tomorrow and I’m excited about giving my soul a space to express itself.

Happy New Year to you and all your readers!
